International Criminal Court awarded Sakharov Prize

The European Parliament has awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its senior officials. In a rare departure from tradition, the distinction was granted to an institution rather than an individual or a specific movement.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced the decision in Strasbourg, stating that the prize recognizes the court’s vital role in upholding international law and justice. The award comes at a time of significant diplomatic tension for the Hague-based jurisdiction, particularly regarding challenges to its competence from the United States.

By honoring the ICC, the European Parliament signals its support for multilateralism and international institutions amidst growing threats and sanctions directed at the court. The Sakharov Prize, established in 1988, is the European Union’s highest tribute for human rights work, honoring those who defend fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.
