International Criminal Court awarded 2026 Sakharov Prize

The European Parliament has awarded the 2026 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its staff. The decision, announced by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, serves as a recognition of the court’s work in upholding international law and justice despite significant political pressure.

The award comes amid a period of intense tension with the United States. The administration of President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions against the ICC, aiming to restrict its operations and transactions. These tensions escalated following the court's 2024 issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant regarding actions in Gaza, as well as investigations into US military actions in Afghanistan.

ICC President Tomoko Akane stated that the prize carries particular significance as the institution faces unprecedented challenges. The award follows another recent recognition for the court's sphere, as former ICC judge Navi Pillay was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The formal Sakharov Prize ceremony is scheduled to take place in Strasbourg.
