International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction prompts global preparedness actions
Observed on October 13, the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction has prompted various regional initiatives focused on preparedness, resilience, and community education.
In Europe, several countries are conducting specific actions. In Romania, the Covasna County Inspectorate for Emergency Situations is hosting open days and educational activities under the theme ‘Resilience starts at home’. Similarly, in Serbia, the Red Cross is organizing school evacuation drills across all 17 municipalities of Belgrade to educate youth on emergency responses.
In Austria, the state of Tyrol is highlighting investments in flood protection and forest management to combat climate-driven weather extremes. In Croatia, officials in Koprivnica-Križevci County are emphasizing the need for inter-sectoral cooperation, including cybersecurity, while national strategies focus on reducing vulnerability to floods and droughts.
In Germany, political discussions in Saxony-Anhalt have centered on the need for better funding and equipment for volunteer fire departments and disaster relief organizations. These collective efforts aim to address the rising global frequency of disasters and the critical need for increased financial investment in prevention.
