International Day of Older Persons: Calls for new care models in Spain
On the International Day of Older Persons, various organizations and regional governments in Spain held events to promote the rights and inclusion of the elderly. The United Nations theme for this year focuses on ‘the era of longevity: rethinking systems for a longer life’, emphasizing the need to adapt social, health, and labor systems to an aging population.
In Spain, the Confederation of Organizations of Older People (Ceoma) called for a new care model that ensures dignity, autonomy, and equal rights. With life expectancy in Spain exceeding 84 years, Ceoma proposed a multi-year funding plan to increase dependency resources to 1.6% of the GDP. The organization also advocated for more realistic representations of aging to combat stereotypes.
Regional celebrations included an event in Torredelcampo organized by the Diputación de Jaén, which gathered over 300 social service users to promote intergenerationality and community building. Similarly, the Diputación de Valladolid hosted a tribute at Teatro Zorrilla for 310 seniors representing 67 municipalities, highlighting the importance of inclusive public policies.
