International Day of Peace marked amid rising global conflicts

The International Day of Peace is being observed globally under the theme ‘Invest in Peace — For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.’ The commemoration comes amid a landscape of widespread armed conflict, with the Council on Foreign Relations tracking 27 active conflicts and the International Committee of the Red Cross operating in more than 100 armed conflicts worldwide.

In various regions, local leaders and advocates are holding events to promote dialogue and community engagement. In Plateau State, Nigeria, peace advocates conducted an awareness walk in Jos to emphasize the importance of reconciliation and tolerance. In Yei River County, leaders called for inclusive dialogue and the provision of essential services as a means to achieve lasting stability.

In the United States, veterans and community leaders gathered in Desert Hot Springs, California, to mark the occasion and honor local peacebuilders. These efforts highlight a global push to prioritize diplomacy, negotiation, and grassroots peacebuilding in response to ongoing wars in regions such as Ukraine, the Middle East, and parts of Africa and Asia.
