International Day of Respectful Parenting promotes empathy and boundaries
September 2 marks the International Day of Respectful Parenting, a date chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the death of British psychologist John Bowlby, a key figure in attachment theory. The day aims to promote child-rearing methods based on empathy, communication, and respect, advocating against physical or verbal violence, threats, and humiliation.
Experts emphasize that respectful parenting does not mean a lack of boundaries or permissiveness. Instead, it involves transforming traditional authority into an emotionally secure discipline. This approach combines clear rules and consistent consequences with the validation of a child's emotions. By providing structure and affection simultaneously, caregivers can help children develop autonomy and self-regulation rather than mere temporary obedience driven by fear.
Psychologists also warn against punitive practices such as the ‘silent treatment,’ noting that effective discipline should focus on explaining the reasons behind rules and teaching emotional tolerance during moments of frustration.
