International Diabetes Federation recognizes type 5 diabetes

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has officially recognized type 5 diabetes in 2025, following decades of scientific debate. The IDF is now calling on other health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), to adopt this classification.

Type 5 diabetes, previously known as malnutrition-related diabetes mellitus (MRDM), is estimated to affect approximately 25 million people worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where healthcare access is limited. The condition is believed to stem from nutritional deficiencies rather than insulin resistance, which is the primary driver of type 2 diabetes.

Because the underlying cause differs from other forms, existing treatments for common diabetes types may be ineffective or even harmful for those with type 5. The condition was first described in Jamaica in 1955, but the WHO withdrew its classification in 1999 due to a lack of evidence. Researchers emphasize that identifying the specific type of diabetes is critical for providing appropriate medical care.
