International Energy Agency releases 100 million barrels of oil and fuel

The International Energy Agency (IEA) is coordinating a new release of 100 million barrels of crude oil, diesel, and gasoline to stabilize markets amid tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. This action follows a broader commitment made in March by 32 IEA member countries to release a total of 400 million barrels to mitigate supply disruptions linked to conflict in the Middle East. As of early October, approximately 325 million barrels of that target have been released.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol has urged member states to evaluate the need for additional diesel releases to manage current supply pressures. The agency emphasized that cooperation among members is essential to managing the situation effectively.

Concurrently, the United States' Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) has reached its lowest level since 1982, falling to approximately 283 million barrels. This depletion of the global market buffer raises concerns regarding the long-term capacity of strategic reserves to absorb future supply shocks.
