International film festivals highlight Spanish cinema and global politics

The 28th edition of the Festival do Rio will open on October 1st at Cine Odeon with the Spanish film ‘La Bola Preta’ (A Bola Preta). Directed by Los Javis and starring Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close, the film previously won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. Inspired by the unfinished work of Federico García Lorca, the narrative follows three gay men across different eras of Spanish history: 1932, 1937, and 2017, exploring themes of desire, repression, and identity.

Meanwhile, the 83rd Venice International Film Festival is characterized by a strong political focus. Artistic director Alberto Barbera has described this edition as the most political in the festival's history. The lineup includes works addressing global conflicts and political shifts, such as the situation in Gaza, the war in Ukraine, and the repression of independent journalism in Russia and Belarus. Notable entries include a documentary on Elon Musk by Alex Gibney and ‘Ink’ by Danny Boyle, which examines Rupert Murdoch’s acquisition of The Sun.
