International Gas Union advocates for renewable gas recognition
The International Gas Union (IGU) has co-signed an open letter addressed to the GHG Protocol, urging the organization to recognize green gas as a key component in global decarbonization efforts. The letter, titled ‘Let Green Gas Count’, calls for greater clarity regarding the role of market instruments for renewable gaseous fuels.
IGU argues that the GHG Protocol must evolve to include robust market-based instruments, such as renewable gas certificates, to provide the investment certainty necessary to deploy low-carbon technologies at scale. Specifically, the IGU is requesting that the Protocol adopt a market-based approach for renewable gases in Scope 1 inventories for both fuel and feedstock applications. Additionally, the group is seeking an interim statement in the first half of 2025 to confirm the recognition of these instruments.
Separately, the e-gasoline market is projected to see significant growth. Estimated at approximately USD 35.2 million in 2025, the market is forecasted to reach nearly USD 819.3 million by 2035, representing a compound annual growth rate of roughly 36.5%. This expansion is driven by investments in Power-to-Liquid technologies, renewable hydrogen, and carbon capture, offering a synthetic alternative for existing internal combustion engine fleets.
