International Gymnastics Federation negotiates AI judging for 2028 Olympics
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) is in advanced negotiations with technology companies to implement an artificial intelligence-based scoring system for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. FIG President Morinari Watanabe confirmed that the goal is to introduce the Judging Support System (JSS) to reduce subjective errors and prevent scoring controversies similar to those seen in Athens 2004 and Paris 2024.
Developed by the Japanese company Fujitsu, the JSS utilizes multiple cameras to capture performances from various angles, creating a three-dimensional representation of movement. The technology analyzes joint angles and specific elements, providing data to officials within 10 to 15 seconds of a routine's completion. While the AI provides detailed analysis, human judges will retain final responsibility for formal scores.
The system is currently being tested at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam, where officials have access to analyses across all ten apparatuses for both men and women. Watanabe noted that previous attempts to introduce this technology at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics were hindered by existing contracts between the International Olympic Committee and Omega.
