International Hashtag Day commemorates the origin of the # symbol
August 23 marks International Hashtag Day, commemorating the origin of the # symbol as a tool for digital organization. The concept was introduced on Twitter on August 23, 2007, by product designer and internet consultant Chris Messina. His first use of the symbol was with the tag #barcamp, intended to group conversations around specific topics.
While not initially an official Twitter feature, the hashtag was adopted by users to categorize information and track trending topics. Its utility was notably demonstrated during the 2007 San Diego wildfires, where tags like #SanDiegoFire helped users follow emergency information. Twitter officially integrated hashtags as clickable links in 2009, and the practice subsequently spread to other major platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn.
Today, an average of 125 million hashtags are shared globally every day. Beyond simple organization, the hashtag has become a cultural phenomenon used to raise awareness for social issues and connect voices across vast distances.
