International health research funding opportunities announced

Two major international funding opportunities have been announced for health and scientific research.

The Carlos Slim Foundation has opened the 2026 call for the Carlos Slim Health Awards, targeting researchers and institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean. The program features two categories: the Exceptional Institution Award for non-profit organizations providing innovative public health solutions, and the Research Career Award for individuals addressing regional sanitary challenges. Each winner receives USD 100,000. Nominations are accepted until November 30, 2026.

Separately, Wellcome has announced the Wellcome Discovery Awards, providing long-term funding for established researchers to explore fundamental questions regarding life, health, and human well-being. The grants, which average £3.5 million and can last up to eight years, are available to multidisciplinary teams, including those based in low- or middle-income countries such as Colombia. Applications for this funding close on September 22, 2026.
