International Interventional Cardiology Day commemorates medical breakthroughs

September 16 marks International Interventional Cardiology Day, a date officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 2022 to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease treatments.

The day commemorates the medical milestone achieved on September 16, 1977, when German physician Andreas Grüntzig performed the first coronary angioplasty in Zurich. This procedure, which uses catheters and balloons to clear obstructed arteries, revolutionized heart treatment by offering alternatives to open-chest surgery.

In Argentina, the Colegio Argentino de Cardioangiólogos Intervencionistas (CACI) is hosting an event at the Centro Cultural de la Ciencia in Buenos Aires to celebrate the specialty, mark the 40th anniversary of the institution, and honor the 49th anniversary of the first angioplasty.
