International job‑scam syndicate linked to China exposed

GroundUp freelancer Joel Cedras deliberately entered a fraudulent online job scheme to document how it operates. The scam advert, an AI‑generated TikTok post featuring Amazon branding and a South African flag, led him to a WhatsApp chat and then to a Telegram account with over 100,000 followers. The perpetrators promise quick earnings for “processing orders” but require a small sign‑up fee and the installation of Telegram, where victims are guided by a “mentor”.

Investigations trace the operation to a syndicate based in China, with staff reportedly located in Myanmar, Nigeria and Thailand. The network targets desperate job seekers in Egypt, Peru, Bangladesh, Iraq, Pakistan, Jordan, South Africa and other countries. Cedras lost nearly R4,000 and received no assistance from banks or police, highlighting the challenges victims face in confronting transnational fraud.
