International Lazy Day celebrates leisure and rest
August 20 marks International Lazy Day, an informal celebration dedicated to leisure and the importance of taking breaks from constant productivity. Rather than promoting permanent inactivity, the day emphasizes the value of rest and free time.
The tradition originated in Itagüí, Colombia, in 1984. Located in the Antioquia department near Medellín, the city has a strong industrial and commercial history. To counter the intense economic activity of the region, organizers created a day for residents to reclaim their leisure time.
As part of the local Fiestas de la Industria, Comercio y la Cultura, the event has become a cultural manifestation where people use public spaces for relaxation. Participants often bring beds, hammocks, pillows, and tents into the streets for parades, concerts, and recreational activities.
