International Literacy Day highlights global education and digital skill gaps

On International Literacy Day, global discussions have centered on the evolving definition of literacy, moving beyond basic reading and writing to include functional, digital, and AI literacy. Experts warn that while technology offers new tools, it also presents challenges such as the need to distinguish fact from fiction and the rise of digital divides.

Global statistics highlight a persistent crisis: approximately 739 million adults lack basic literacy skills, with women making up two-thirds of this group. In many regions, including parts of Africa and Asia, the challenge remains acute. In response, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged $50 million to support foundational learning in sub-Saharan Africa.

National efforts vary. In Brazil, cities like Maricá and Campina Grande are being recognized for successful literacy programs. In Cuba, the historical legacy of its national literacy campaign is highlighted as a model for overcoming ignorance through political will. Meanwhile, in Italy and Senegal, leaders are calling for increased funding and a focus on literacy as a driver for entrepreneurship and social inclusion.
