International Maritime Organization emphasizes seafarer welfare and policy implementation

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has highlighted the critical need to prioritize seafarer safety, wellbeing, and fair treatment within the global maritime industry. During the Crew Connect Global event in the Philippines, IMO Maritime Safety Director D. Chevallier noted that security, training, and mental health support are interconnected priorities essential for maintaining uninterrupted global trade.

In conjunction with World Maritime Day, the IMO also addressed the challenge of transitioning international maritime policies into practical results. The organization has adopted the theme ‘From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence’ for 2026 and 2027. This two-year focus aims to assist Member States in bridging the gap between adopting international conventions and ensuring effective enforcement and implementation on ships and in ports.

As the sector undergoes transformations driven by decarbonization and digitalization, the IMO emphasizes that investing in a resilient, future-ready workforce is vital. This includes improving working conditions, protecting rights, and providing access to quality maritime education to meet the evolving demands of modern shipping.
