International Maritime Organization marks World Maritime Day

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is observing World Maritime Day, with the theme ‘From policy to practice: promoting maritime excellence’ selected for both 2026 and 2027. This two-year theme emphasizes the transition of international regulations into concrete actions through technical assistance, training, and capacity building.

The global shipping industry faces significant challenges, including the urgent need for decarbonization to meet IMO targets of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Industry leaders are focusing on technological innovation, such as alternative fuels like hydrogen and methanol, alongside the integration of artificial intelligence and improved regulatory clarity.

Furthermore, maritime security remains a critical concern. Geopolitical conflicts in regions such as the Strait of Hormuz, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Azov have led to attacks on merchant vessels and disruptions to global supply chains. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez noted that while the IMO develops global rules for safety and environmental protection, effective implementation depends on individual governments incorporating these rules into national law.
