International migration trends in Hungary and Czechia
Research and reports highlight distinct migration patterns and socio-economic challenges for foreign residents in Hungary and the Czech Republic.
In Hungary, studies conducted by HUN-REN and ELTE reveal an increasing number of elderly foreign nationals settling in rural areas. While German retirees frequently favor the Balaton region and counties like Somogy and Zala, there is also a significant influx of elderly Hungarians from Transcarpathia, Ukraine, particularly in the border villages of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg. Motivations for this migration include the search for safety, peace, family ties, and political stability.
In the Czech Republic, approximately 1.15 million foreign citizens reside legally, accounting for about 10% of the population. A report indicates that one-fifth of these immigrants live near the poverty line, facing difficulties integrating into society. Challenges include precarious employment in low-skilled sectors, language barriers, and unequal access to healthcare, housing, and social systems. The report calls for stricter measures against labor exploitation and simplified administrative processes to prevent social isolation and poverty among migrant groups.
