NASA sponsors International Observe the Moon Night 2026

On September 19, 2026, global communities participated in the International Observe the Moon Night, an annual event sponsored by NASA to promote lunar science and exploration awareness.

The timing coincided with the moon’s first quarter phase, providing optimal viewing conditions. During this phase, the sun’s low-angle lighting creates long shadows along the terminator line, making lunar topography such as craters, mountains, and ridges more visible to observers using the naked eye, binoculars, or telescopes.

NASA provided specialized maps to guide observers toward significant landmarks, including the Apollo landing sites and various lunar maria. In the United States, events were held at locations such as the Goddard Space Flight Center and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, featuring scientific talks, STEM activities, and exhibits related to the Artemis II mission. Globally, the event encouraged public engagement through astronomical observation, photography, and educational activities to deepen the connection between the public and lunar exploration.
