Communities globally marked the 25th anniversary of International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, focusing on remembrance, stigma reduction, and harm reduction education.

In the United States, provisional CDC data indicates a downward trend in overdose deaths, with an estimated 69,973 deaths in 2025, representing a nearly 14% decline from 2024. In Maryland, officials reported that fatal overdoses have been halved over the last three years, supported by the distribution of over 460,000 naloxone doses last year.

In Italy, overdose deaths rose by 7.8% in 2025, totaling 249 fatalities. Notably, cocaine and crack have surpassed heroin as the primary substances involved in fatal acute intoxications, accounting for 33% of cases.

In Canada, the Saskatchewan Coroners Service issued an alert in Regina following three suspected toxic drug overdose deaths. In Terrace, British Columbia, community members gathered to honor victims and discuss the impact of the crisis on Indigenous populations.
