International Overdose Awareness Day marks 25th anniversary
International Overdose Awareness Day marks its 25th anniversary on August 31, 2026. Under the theme ‘25 years on. Still needed.’, global communities are mobilizing to remember those lost to overdose, reduce stigma, and advocate for life-saving interventions.
Key focus areas across various regions include the distribution and training for naloxone, a medication capable of reversing opioid overdoses. In the United States, initiatives range from live entertainment industry partnerships aiming to train 10,000 people, to community events in Alabama, Mississippi, and Pennsylvania. In Canada, efforts in Grey and Bruce counties emphasize harm reduction and addressing the toxic drug supply.
In Europe, Italy is highlighting the importance of timely access to care, while Scotland is providing free naloxone training and kits to commuters at Edinburgh Waverley Station. In South Africa, the day serves as a platform to discuss harm reduction specifically for the LGBTQ+ community. The global movement continues to push for evidence-based policies such as drug checking services, needle programs, and increased access to medical assistance to prevent avoidable deaths.
