International Paper reports US$1.1 billion loss in Q3 2026
International Paper reported a loss from continuing operations of US$1.1 billion for the third quarter of 2026, a significant increase from the US$426 million deficit recorded in Q3 2025. The loss was primarily driven by a US$1.38 billion non-cash goodwill impairment charge related to its Packaging Solutions EMEA business segment, reflecting reduced valuations due to weak demand and pricing pressure in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Despite the overall loss, the company’s North American Packaging division saw its operating profit more than double to US$427 million, up from US$204 million in the previous quarter. This growth was supported by higher selling values, which helped offset volume losses from subdued demand.
For the fourth quarter of 2026, the company has set an operating profit target for its North American segment between US$460 million and US$500 million. CEO Andrew Silvernail noted that the company is focusing on cost discipline and operational improvements to manage inflationary pressures and market volatility.
