International Pharmaceutical Federation updates Ebola response guidelines

The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) has released updated guidelines to enhance the preparedness and response capabilities of pharmacists during Ebola outbreaks and other public health emergencies. The new document provides updated information on prevention, clinical management, vaccination strategies, and infection control.

Designed for community, hospital, and primary care pharmacists, as well as emergency responders, the guide integrates recent scientific advancements regarding filovirus diseases. It complements existing World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations and incorporates lessons learned from previous outbreaks, including the 2014–2016 West African epidemic and the 2026 outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The FIP emphasizes that pharmacists are among the most accessible healthcare professionals. Their role includes recognizing suspected cases, providing reliable information to the public, supporting vaccination programs, and ensuring continued access to essential medicines when healthcare systems are under pressure.
