International Press Centre deploys AI tool to protect journalists

The International Press Centre (IPC) has launched WAFLO, a WhatsApp-enabled artificial intelligence system designed to monitor and document attacks against journalists. The tool will undergo a pilot deployment during the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.

According to IPC Executive Director Lanre Arogundade, the platform enables real-time reporting, verification, and documentation of incidents such as assaults, threats, and intimidation. The goal is to ensure that infringements on press freedom are not left unreported, allowing stakeholders to respond promptly to safety concerns.

The initiative is part of the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Phase Two (EU-SDGNII) programme, implemented by the IPC and the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO). Following the Osun pilot, the IPC plans to expand the technology for full deployment during the 2027 general elections. The project is being conducted in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
