International Primate Day calls for urgent species conservation

International Primate Day, observed annually on September 1, serves as a global call to action for the protection and conservation of primate species. Established in 2005 by the British organization Animal Defenders International, the day aims to raise awareness regarding the end of laboratory testing on primates and the preservation of their natural habitats.

Primates, including great apes, monkeys, lemurs, and tarsiers, play vital roles in their ecosystems as pollinators and seed dispersers. However, many species face severe threats from deforestation, climate change, and illegal wildlife trafficking. The illegal trade, particularly the capture of young individuals for the pet trade or unregulated entertainment, significantly disrupts social dynamics and reproductive stability within wild populations.
