International researchers advance astronomical data and observation tools
Researchers from Brazil and Portugal are contributing to major advancements in astronomical observation and data processing.
In Brazil, the Laboratory of Computing and Artificial Intelligence (LAB-IA) at the Brazilian Center for Physics Research (CBPF) has developed Arandu. This artificial intelligence-based broker is designed to process the massive volume of data produced by NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Arandu will identify and classify transient astronomical phenomena, such as stellar explosions and brightness oscillations, allowing scientists to quickly react to significant cosmic events.
Meanwhile, the 'Moons' spectrograph, which involved scientists from the University of Lisbon, has completed its first observations at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. This instrument is capable of observing approximately one thousand astronomical objects simultaneously using infrared light. It aims to map the 3D distribution of stars and galaxies, helping researchers understand the formation and evolution of the Milky Way and the distant universe over the next decade.
