International Rice Research Institute partners with Odisha to boost specialty rice

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) from the Philippines is collaborating with the Odisha state government to enhance the cultivation and commercialization of indigenous specialty rice. A central focus of this partnership is Kalajeera rice, with efforts aimed at preserving its unique aroma, genetics, and quality.

The initiative includes technical support for developing health-focused Low-Glycemic Index (Low-GI) rice varieties. To support farmers, the state plans to use Kalajeera rice as a primary demonstration project, leveraging higher Minimum Support Prices (MSP) and creating value-added products from broken rice. The strategy also involves establishing localized raw rice mill units and regional processing infrastructure to empower rural farmers and women’s groups as micro-entrepreneurs.
