International study finds bird songs share structural patterns with human language

An international research team led by the University of Edinburgh, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Teikyo University in Japan has identified a previously undetected structure in the songs of Bengalese Finches. The analysis shows that the birds’ vocal sequences follow a Zipfian distribution—the same statistical pattern that characterises human language—indicating that a few “words” are used very frequently while many are rare.

The findings build on earlier work showing similar systematic structures in humpback whale songs, suggesting that certain foundational elements of language may be universal to learned communication across species. The researchers applied methods inspired by how infants segment speech to song recordings collected in Japan, demonstrating that these patterns emerge early in the birds’ development and are transmitted culturally.

The study challenges the view that language is uniquely human and points to shared evolutionary solutions for complex communication.
