International Translation Day honors language professionals

September 30 marks International Translation Day, a date established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017 to honor the vital role of language professionals in fostering global dialogue, peace, and security. The date coincides with the feast of St. Jerome, the patron saint of translators, who was known for his work translating the Bible into Latin.

The profession is currently undergoing significant shifts due to the rise of artificial intelligence. While AI tools can accelerate workflows and handle repetitive tasks, experts note that human intervention remains essential for high-value, complex, and culturally nuanced work. The industry is seeing a polarization between low-cost automated services and high-value human expertise.

New roles are emerging within the localization sector, including positions focused on post-editing, quality assurance, and terminology management. The International Federation of Translators has designated ‘Linguistic Diversity and Language Rights’ as the theme for 2026, emphasizing the importance of linguistic inclusion and equity in an increasingly digital world.
