International Vinyl Record Day marks continued global resurgence of analog music

International Vinyl Record Day is celebrated on August 12, marking a continued resurgence of analog music despite the dominance of digital streaming. According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), vinyl revenues saw a global increase of 13.7% in 2025, marking the 19th consecutive year of growth for the format.

In Brazil, vinyl represents 76% of physical media sales within a music market valued at approximately R$ 3 billion. Rare Brazilian records, such as Lula Côrtes and Zé Ramalho’s ‘Paêbirú’, can command prices exceeding R$ 10,000 due to extreme scarcity.

Historically, Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ remains the best-selling vinyl album of all time with over 70 million copies sold. Other notable high-selling titles include The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ and Pink Floyd’s ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’. The annual celebration, which originated in California in 2002, honors the cultural influence of the format and the ritualistic nature of physical music consumption.
