International vocalists promote Korean art songs through global competitions

International vocalists are increasingly performing Korean art songs (K-Gagok) as part of global cultural exchange initiatives. The KBS program ‘K-Gagok Superstar,’ sponsored by Gangnam-gu, features 10 finalists from eight different countries who competed among 126 applicants from 36 nations. The competition, judged by figures such as soprano Sumi Jo, showcases foreign singers interpreting Korean lyrics in their own voices. The program includes a documentary titled ‘K-Gagok Superstar Begins’ which follows the participants' experiences with Korean culture.

In a related cultural effort, the ‘Resonance Korea 2026’ concert is scheduled for October 2 at the Cheongju Arts Center. This performance features four vocalists from the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. The repertoire includes both classical opera staples and Korean art songs such as ‘Bomcheonyeo’ and ‘Grieun Geumgangsan.’ The event aims to expand the international repertoire of Korean art songs through diverse vocal interpretations and electronic organ arrangements.
