International Women's Film and TV Showcase addresses gender gap in Mexico

The 22nd International Women's Film and TV Showcase in Mexico City is highlighting the persistent gender gap in the audiovisual industry. The festival will feature 41 titles from 12 different countries, including the documentary ‘Llamarse Olimpia’ by Indira Cato.

Organizers and industry figures, such as Procine director Abril Alzaga, noted that women are still often relegated to the status of a “minority” in the sector, while a disproportionate share of cultural budgets is allocated to men. Statistics from the Mexican Film Statistical Yearbook indicate that out of approximately 235 feature films produced in Mexico in 2025, only 52 were directed exclusively by women.

The event serves as a forum to demand more transparent selection processes and equitable public funding, particularly regarding institutions like the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE). Industry representatives from Egeda México suggested that increasing the number of women in production roles could help bridge the gap by providing more opportunities for female directors to gain experience and confidence on major digital platforms.
