International Youth Day: Global initiatives focus on youth empowerment and policy

Global observations and local initiatives mark the celebration of International Youth Day, highlighting the diverse challenges and roles of young people worldwide.

In Zagreb, the city has launched a call for youth-led projects to address climate challenges, offering grants between 2,000 and 4,000 euros for initiatives involving adaptation to heatwaves, storms, and floods. Similarly, in Michoacán, Mexico, health authorities are strengthening mental health services and addiction prevention through community centers.

On a global scale, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that while youth share common aspirations for dignity and participation, they face systemic obstacles like economic uncertainty and climate change. In Burkina Faso, panels have called for youth to take responsibility in nation-building, while in Slovenia and Austria, youth organizations are advocating for better labor market security and safer nightlife standards.

In Macedonia, government officials highlighted the importance of including young people in decision-making processes to create better policies. Meanwhile, in Serbia, research indicates a high willingness among youth to vote despite low trust in political institutions, with a growing majority supporting EU membership.
