International Youth Day highlights global goals and Moldovan demographic challenges

International Youth Day, observed on August 12, has highlighted both global aspirations and specific regional challenges for young people. The 2026 theme, ‘Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,’ focuses on the shared desire for dignity, education, and sustainable futures, particularly for youth in developing and island nations.

In Moldova, the day was marked by large-scale events, including a gathering of over 1,500 young people in Bălți. However, statistical data reveals significant demographic and economic hurdles. The youth population in Moldova is declining, with the number of people aged 14 to 34 decreasing by 13,500 over the past year.

Economic data from the National Bureau of Statistics indicates a high NEET rate (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). Nearly 40% of Moldovan youth aged 15 to 29 are neither working nor studying. Additionally, while student enrollment has seen a slight increase, a significant portion of the working youth population is engaged in informal employment.
