International Youth Day marks focus on nicotine prevention and democratic participation

On International Youth Day, August 12, advocates and organizations are highlighting the diverse challenges and aspirations of young people globally.

Youth advocates are calling for stronger government action to combat tobacco industry efforts to recruit young consumers. Reports indicate varying levels of nicotine addiction and industry interference across several regions. In Indonesia, digital content is being used to normalize vaping among students, while in Egypt, adolescent girls are increasingly using waterpipes. In Europe, nicotine pouches are spreading among adolescents in Sweden. Additionally, industry lobbying has been noted in Kenya and Zambia, attempting to weaken health warnings and advertising bans, while Colombia faces challenges with enforcement of existing tobacco regulations.

The Commonwealth is marking the day under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” focusing on the role of youth in promoting development and democratic resilience. A virtual dialogue will feature young leaders from various regions to discuss how youth are addressing technological change, political polarization, and misinformation to strengthen democratic governance and civic engagement.
