Internet Archive faces access blocks from major news publishers
The Internet Archive, home to the Wayback Machine, is facing significant challenges to its digital preservation efforts. Major news organizations, including The New York Times, The Guardian, USA Today, and The Atlantic, along with over 340 local news outlets in the United States, have blocked the archive from accessing their content.
Publishers cite concerns regarding the unauthorized use of their work by artificial intelligence companies to train large language models (LLMs). They argue that the archive acts as a “back door” to bypass paywalls and licensing agreements. Critics of these blocks suggest that preventing access to the non-profit library may hinder journalists, researchers, scientists, and historians from verifying historical truths.
