Internet culture terms sugar mama and sugar daddy explained

The terms ‘sugar mama’ and ‘sugar daddy’ have become increasingly prevalent in social media and popular culture. A ‘sugar mama’ is defined as a wealthy, older woman who provides financial or material support to a younger partner, typically in exchange for companionship or intimacy.

According to research published in the academic journal Archives of Sexual Behavior, which analyzed attitudes toward ‘sugar relationships’ across 87 countries, these dynamics involve one person providing resources in exchange for companionship and, in some instances, sexual relationships. While age gaps alone do not define such a relationship, the combination of age, wealth, and specific financial dynamics is central to the term.

In internet culture, these terms are often used both literally and ironically to describe relationships where there is a significant income disparity. However, experts note that the labels can be stereotyping, as not all relationships between older women and younger men are based on financial arrangements.
