Internet Initiative Japan launches dual-carrier IoT SIM

Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ) has launched ‘IIJ Multi-Profile SIM 2.0’, a communication solution for businesses that allows a single SIM card to switch between the NTT Docomo and KDDI networks. Utilizing patented line redundancy technology, the solution is designed for the IoT sector where high availability and connection stability are critical.

The SIM stores communication profiles for both carriers, enabling devices with only one SIM slot to achieve carrier redundancy. Users can configure switching conditions based on signal strength or connection monitoring. The service also supports closed network connections that do not pass through the public internet and features ‘packet sharing,’ allowing data capacity to be aggregated and shared across both carriers under a single pricing structure.

Itec Co., Ltd. has already adopted the technology for its wireless parking systems, including automated payment machines and surveillance cameras, to ensure continuous connectivity for cashless transactions. Several IoT router and gateway manufacturers, including Fuji Soft and Connexio, already provide compatible devices, with more companies expected to follow.
