Internet usage trends and governance discussions in Portugal and Brazil
A new study on Portuguese social media habits shows an increase in daily usage, with the average time spent rising from 84 minutes in 2025 to 105 minutes in 2026. Among young people aged 15 to 24, the average daily time spent on social platforms has reached 2.5 hours. While 98.1% of Portuguese users access social media at least once a day, the study also notes a trend of platform abandonment; 24.3% of all users and 40% of young users reported leaving at least one platform in the last year, often citing a lack of interest.
In Brazil, Wikimedia Brasil organized the Internet Governance and Free Knowledge Training School in São Paulo to address the regulation of social media, online platforms, and artificial intelligence. The event brought together experts and Wikimedians to discuss digital rights and the democratic circulation of knowledge. This initiative follows observations that Brazil has one of the highest levels of online connectivity, with users averaging over 115 hours of connectivity per week.
