INTERPOL identifies 126 terror suspects using AI technology
INTERPOL has identified 126 suspected foreign terrorist fighters through Operation Shams II, an international counter-terrorism initiative that utilized artificial intelligence and facial recognition technology. Coordinated from Tunis, Tunisia, between June 1 and June 5, the operation involved 28 specialized agents and experts from 11 countries, including Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Iraq, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, the Philippines, Qatar, Tajikistan, Tunisia, and Uzbekistan.
During the five-day mission, investigators extracted 108,076 facial images from jihadist propaganda published online. AI-driven agents and automated scripts were employed to deduplicate the data and assess image quality, narrowing the set to 6,362 high-quality images for processing through INTERPOL’s facial recognition system. All AI-generated results were subsequently verified by trained human analysts.
In addition to biometric tracking, the operation targeted terrorist financing by using cryptocurrency tracing tools, leading to three urgent data requests to virtual asset service providers. The findings are being integrated into global security databases, and investigative leads are already supporting judicial proceedings in participating nations, including the case of two currently detained suspects.
