INTERPOL launches global campaign against deepfake fraud

INTERPOL has initiated an international educational campaign titled “Stop. Verify. Don’t get caught.” The initiative aims to warn the public about the rising threat of crimes utilizing generative artificial intelligence and deepfake technology.

The campaign features three AI-generated short videos demonstrating how synthetic materials can be used to impersonate voices and images for financial fraud, investment scams, romance scams, blackmail, and disinformation. Experts note that the accessibility of large language models and generative AI has lowered the technological barrier for criminals, allowing them to create highly realistic personas that lack traditional red flags like spelling errors or poor formatting.

INTERPOL advises individuals to be wary of unexpected contact from unknown persons, high-pressure tactics demanding immediate action, emotional manipulation, requests for unusual payment methods such as cryptocurrency, and attempts to move conversations away from official platforms.
