Interpol operation targets global investment fraud as German cybercrime rises

International law enforcement efforts against investment fraud have seen significant results through Interpol’s ‘First Light 2026’ operation. The coordinated action led to 811 arrests across 97 countries and the seizure of approximately $293 million in assets, demonstrating the effectiveness of global cooperation against social engineering crimes.

In Germany, the landscape of fraud is shifting toward digital and international methods. While domestic fraud cases registered by police fell to 681,354 in 2025, there was a notable increase in crimes committed from abroad or untraceable locations. Specifically, 549,385 cases were recorded where the perpetrator acted from outside Germany but the impact occurred within the country, representing a 7% increase from the previous year.

Data suggests a growing vulnerability among younger demographics to cyber-trading fraud. A survey indicated that while 69% of Baby Boomers recognize high-return promises as a warning sign, only 45% of Gen Z respondents identify the same signal, highlighting a gap between digital literacy and fraud prevention competence.
