AI accelerates cyber threats and drives calls for government oversight

Artificial intelligence is rapidly altering the cybersecurity landscape, providing malicious actors with tools to accelerate attacks while complicating defense efforts. Interpol warns that AI is not revolutionizing crime but rather enhancing the speed and scale of existing tactics like scams and fraud. The rise of agentic AI—systems capable of making independent decisions—introduces new risks, including potential physical harm in autonomous vehicles and autonomous attack chains.

Microsoft reports that threat actors currently hold an advantage, using AI to speed up vulnerability discovery and malware development. The time between discovering a vulnerability and its weaponization has dropped below 24 hours. In Germany, ransomware attacks reportedly increased by 276 percent in the year leading up to June 2026.

In response to these escalating risks, Bill Gates has called for binding government oversight, arguing that voluntary corporate self-regulation is insufficient to ensure safety. He emphasizes that security measures must involve policymakers and law enforcement to prevent AI from being used for large-scale harm, including in the military sector.
