British investor recovers $4.5 million in lost Bitcoin
A British investor, identified as Chris, has successfully recovered 61 Bitcoin after 12 years. The assets, which were thought to be lost following the closure of the cryptocurrency exchange Intersango, are now valued at approximately £3.33 million ($4.5 million).
Chris originally purchased the Bitcoin in 2011 via the platform Britcoin, which later rebranded as Intersango. He invested roughly £1,500 (approximately $2,000) at a time when Bitcoin was priced at less than $4 per coin. Access to the funds was lost when Intersango ceased trading in late 2012 and its website went offline in early 2014. The company was eventually liquidated in 2016.
The recovery was facilitated by the law firm CEL Solicitors. After years of unsuccessful attempts to reclaim the assets, lawyers used specialized transaction-tracking software to locate a wallet believed to contain holdings from former Intersango customers. The process involved significant challenges, including gathering decade-old bank statements and legal documentation to prove ownership.
