Interstate 25 in Colorado sees multi-crash incident and wildlife bridge success
The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a series of ten separate vehicle crashes that occurred on southbound Interstate 25 west of Windsor. The incidents, which began around 6:31 a.m., included two hit-and-run collisions. One involved a Kia Seltos that was struck by a dark-colored pickup truck, which then fled the scene. No injuries were reported in the various collisions involving multiple vehicles, including a Hyundai Tucson, a Honda Civic, a Chevrolet Traverse, and a Subaru Forester.
In a separate development regarding the same interstate corridor, the Colorado Department of Transportation’s wildlife crossing project between Denver and Colorado Springs has reported significant success. The wildlife overpass, located between Larkspur and Monument, has contributed to a 91% reduction in animal-vehicle collisions over the last 10 months. Previously, the area averaged one such accident per day.
The $15 million structure is the largest wildlife bridge in North America, connecting 39,000 hectares of habitat. The system includes the overpass and five underground passages. Beyond wildlife safety, the project has also resulted in an approximately 9% reduction in travel times along that stretch of I-25.
