Interventional cardiology advances minimally invasive heart treatments

Interventional cardiology is transforming the treatment of cardiovascular diseases by utilizing minimally invasive procedures that reduce the need for open-heart surgery. Using catheters, real-time imaging, and precise medical devices, specialists can now access delicate heart structures through small punctures in the skin, typically via the wrist or groin.

These advancements, which include techniques like angioplasty to treat narrowed coronary arteries, aim to minimize complications, shorten hospital stays, and accelerate patient recovery. This evolution traces back to the first coronary angioplasty performed by Andreas Grüntzig in 1977.

In Spain, circulatory system diseases accounted for 25.7% of deaths in 2025, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE), with ischemic heart diseases causing 26,711 fatalities. Medical technology companies, such as B. Braun through its Aesculap division, continue to support these procedures by providing solutions for angiography, angioplasty, and cardiac monitoring.
