Intesa Sanpaolo CEO Carlo Messina disputes new bank levies

Carlo Messina, CEO of Intesa Sanpaolo, has expressed concerns regarding potential new contributions from the banking and insurance sectors as part of Italy's budget maneuvers. Speaking at the Coldiretti International Forum on Agriculture and Food in Rome, Messina noted that a three-year agreement was already reached last year with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to provide stability for both public finances and banks.

Messina argued that the banking sector, along with insurance companies, serves as a primary supporter of Italian public debt. He emphasized that any new levies should be managed with equity and consistency regarding prior agreements. He also suggested that the government should consider taxing other highly profitable companies rather than focusing solely on the financial sector.

In a separate economic development, Consip has activated a new convention for the supply of natural gas to public administrations. Valued at approximately 1.1 billion euros, the agreement covers the national territory, excluding Sardinia, and aims to provide integrated energy management services for a 12-month period.
