Intesa Sanpaolo targets growth in Spain and seeks takeover of Monte dei Paschi
Intesa Sanpaolo's asset‑management division, led by Maria Luisa Gota, is preparing a reorganisation of its Eurizon unit to accelerate growth outside Italy, with a particular focus on expanding into the Spanish market. The bank currently has 17% of its assets under management abroad and is developing products such as ETFs while aiming to increase its international presence.
At the same time, Intesa Sanpaolo has launched a €30.6 billion public tender offer (Opas) to acquire Monte dei Paschi di Siena. The proposal, which will be put to a shareholders' meeting on 10 September, seeks to integrate MPS into Intesa’s group and could elevate Intesa to the position of the second‑largest European banking group by market capitalisation. The deal involves other financial actors, including Banco BPM, Mediobanca and Generali, and awaits regulatory approval.
